HOW IT BEGAN
An idea that won the world over
What started as a sketch became one of Airbnb's most celebrated "OMG Design Contest" winners.
The question was simple: what if a home could feel as perfectly engineered as nature itself? Not inspired by nature — built on the same logic that has made the skep beehive one of the most enduring structures on earth.
THE INSPIRATION
What is a skep?
Ring built upon ring. A structure of complete simplicity that becomes something beautiful.
A skep is a domed hive woven from coiled straw — used by beekeepers for centuries. Simple in form, extraordinary in logic. That geometry became the blueprint for The Hive.
THE PEOPLE BEHIND IT
Pam & Bruce
Pam sees what doesn't exist yet. Bruce figures out how to build it. Together they've spent a decade making small, intentional places to stay — from Portland, Oregon, to the shores of West Michigan and now Northern Michigan. The Hive is their most ambitious project yet.
A technique borrowed from the earth itself
To build the skep form at full scale, Pam and Bruce trained in SuperAdobe — a construction method developed by architect Nader Khalili using coiled sandbags stacked into self-supporting domes. They learned the technique through Cal-Earth Institute in California, then brought it north to the Michigan pines.
